Casting was a major part of this assignment. Having people identify with the campaign was key to its success, so the model selection was crucial. Their nationalities ranged from Indian, Chinese, Latin American, and Filipino to Caucasian. Seth is a young photographer who is close in age to the recruits. He had worked for my husband, which is how I first met him and started working with him. Every year, he sends me a Christmas card of his family—a beautiful black & white portrait. That’s the reason I knew he’d be right for this project. His work has a human quality but also a nice sense of design. We shot at Princeton because we wanted to include small visual cues that said “college campus,” like stone arches, labs, blackboards. He did a beautiful job, though we ended up cropping the images pretty closely for our design. The campaign is doing incredibly well and is featured across college campuses nationwide. -Leslie Smolan

DAVID YARRITU FOR WEST ELM Talent referenced: David Yarritu Link: http://patbates.com/david_yarritu_ad/ Please take a look at the West Elm Spring Catalog; David Yarritu was brought on board to Art Direct over 20 pages of it- all of it shot in studio in San Francisco, California. A stand out story celebrating all things striped. For this, David took inspiration from the work of Roy Lichtenstein, as well as the movie musical adaption of the comic book character, Dick Tracy. It was the colors used in the film- the intense reds, yellows, greens, and blues that caught David's eye (the performances of Warren Beatty and Madonna instantly forgotten). In a section devoted to work by ETSY artists and crafts people, David designed a set based on the mid-century California Eichler homes. Set builders worked to create an in-studio model home in essence, which included a fireplace, clerestory windows, and a patio beyond the floor to ceiling glass. It was a fresh direction, different from the brownstone and loft interiors that West Elm usually employs. Everyone working in the studio wanted to move right in!
